A big moment for community energy

It's been a month already, but we are still buzzing. In case you missed the headlines, here's the scoop: the community energy sector has been promised a funding boost of up to £1bn as part of the Government's Local Power Plan.

It’s a big moment for the sector, a welcome investment and recognition of what we have always known – that communities have the power to unlock the UK’s pathway to a clean energy future that puts money directly into people’s pockets. Our CEO and Co-founder Afsheen Kabir Rashid MBE lays it out in our recent blog. Read it now via the button below.

Local Power Plan HERE

To mark the launch of the Local Power Plan, Chair of Great British Energy Juergen Maier and Climate Minister Katie White OBE MP  joined members of our team and Community Energy Barnet at Burnt Oak Leisure Centre. The key take-away from the day's discussion: "We need more Sarahs!"

That means we need more community champions. People who get involved in their local community, develop their skills and build local co-operatives from the ground up. Like Sarah Taggart, who helped to set up Community Energy Barnet and is now working in the solar development team at Repowering London.

Next up on a packed calendar, Repowering London joined a coalition led by Community Energy England and signed an open letter calling on the Government to #UpTheEnergy on community power.

We are ready to play our part in the urban transition to clean, local and affordable energy — and this means driving forward delivery at scale. Our goal is for communities in every town and city in the UK to be empowered with clean energy and to live in warm, healthy and comfortable homes by 2030.

Last but not least, on 18 March, our team was welcomed into the halls of Whitehall by the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero as part of Community Energy Day 2026. Leading a workshop with HEAL on how community-led retrofit can support the Government's Warm Homes Plan, our Senior Programme Manager for Retrofit, Gordon, explored the barriers to scaling up domestic retrofit, and how policy change can help. He emphasised the value that we have seen in rooting retrofit work firmly in the community, and reminded the audience that: "if you want to go fast, go alone - if you want to go far, go together."

A new share offer is coming to Newham

Community Energy Newham (CEN) is opening its second Community Share Offer soon. Following on from its first successful offer last year, it will be raising £140,000 to bring solar panels installed on two Newham primary schools into public ownership. Our Green Skills Youth Training Programme cohort graduates in Newham

Green skills, flying colours

After tackling subjects like low-carbon and renewable technologies and retrofit and sustainability in the built environment, our 2026 Green Skills Youth Training Programme cohort has graduated with flying colours. The group of young people from across Newham were introduced to community energy with the aim of inspiring them to plot a future as part of the Green Economy.

And judging by the group’s feedback, the effort seems to have been successful. Comments included:

“The whole programme was amazing and allowed me to branch out and discover different jobs within the Green Sector, that before I didn’t know existed.”

“I gained valuable insight into how sustainability principles are implemented in a professional setting.”

Solar panels like these will soon be coming to the London borough of Westminster as part of the newest Repowered Community initiative

Westminster Repowered Community kicks off

Last week the local community, with the support of Repowering London, launched the Westminster Repowered Community.

Following on from the flagship programme, Repowered Community Newham, it will accelerate the delivery of a just, community-led energy transition in the City of Westminster. The programme supports Westminster’s Climate Action Plan and Fairer Westminster ambitions.

The next steps will involve building inclusive governance structures, bringing in community participation, the development of community-owned rooftop solar installations and support for community-led retrofit in blocks of flats.

This activity will all lay the foundations for delivering clean energy generation, reducing carbon emissions and tackling fuel poverty in the borough. Listen to our CEO Afsheen Kabir Rashid MBE talk about the project using the link below.

We are looking for London blocks of flats with which to partner on retrofit

Energy efficiency: Does your block
need to do better?

When it comes to retrofit opportunities and improving home energy efficiency, blocks of flats are being left behind. With 54% of Londoners living in flats and 41% of London homes rated EPC band D or lower, we knew this was a problem we had to tackle.

Our subsidised retrofit feasibility service provides a great opportunity for London-based blocks of flats to explore what they can do to improve the energy efficiency, sustainability and comfort of their buildings, and gives the foundations and support to take the next steps.

And we are looking for blocks to partner with now.
